Unit 6 - Ads of the Past; 2/6

Ad 1 - Fat! Eat! Eat! & Always stay thin!
This add is clearly telling those reading it to stay thin, and not fat because being fat is ugly and uncool. Being thin is what all the celebrities and popular figures are doing. They are trying to sell you worms because they think that when you eat alot, then consume the worms, the worms will consume the extra fat/food in your body therefore, making you thin. I think that the media (obviously) allowed this to run because they wanted to get a point across. These ads suggest that the American society is based on looks. By being thin, you are considered beautiful despite on how you look. If I were to compare this ad to an ad running today, like Jenny Craig, Jenny Craig refrains from the word fat and offer a healthier way of losing weight. By excercising, and not eating worms, you could stay in shape in a better and safer way that could improve everything you physically do. These ads target women because fat women are not physically atractive. If a woman is fat, she cannot get any men, but if the woman is thin, she could get any man she desires.

Ad2 - Blow in her face and she'll follow you anywhere.
This ad is convince people to smoke, by smoking you could attract "attractive" people. Since smoking was "cool" back then, and it was legal to put up ads about smoking, this ad was able to come out to the public. This ad suggests that many American smoke to attract other people, to show that they are popular or cool. If I were to compare this so a non-smoking ad, the non-smoking ad would tell the reader the negative affects of smoking. On how it could affect you and those around you. This ad is targetting men. They're implying that if a man smokes and blows the smoke into a girls face, showing her that he smokes and is cool, he could automatically get the girl.
